His personality, style and the qualities of his voice led him to a successful artistic career in the whole field of Latin music and salsa during the 1970s and 1980s. The cleanness and brightness of his voice, coupled with impeccable diction and the ability to sing long and fast phrases with total naturalness, made him one of the favourite singers of the Latin public.
Hector LaVoe was born Hector Juan Perez in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He attended the Ponce Free School of Music. By the age of 14, he was singing with a band, and he opted to drop out of school. "El Cantante De Los Cantantes", as he is affectionately known, came to New York at age 17 with the dream of making it big. With no formal singing training this skinny kid from Barrio San Antonio in Ponce, caught the ears of Johnny Pacheco. Pacheco was amazed at the raw talent this young kid had. Because Pacheco already had a singer (Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez) and during those times you only needed one singer. Lavoe only sang sparingly on weekend gigs.

Héctor Juan Pérez Martínez (30 de setiembre de 1946, Ponce – 29 de xunu de 1993, Nueva York), conocíu como Héctor Lavoe,[3] foi un cantante, compositor y productor musical de salsa mientres los años 1970 y 1980.
Integró la orquesta de Willie Colón, dende 1967 hasta 1974 onde llogró la reconocencia con cantares como «Aguanile», «Che Che Colé», «La Murga», «Juana Peña», «Calle luna, Calle sol», «Barrunto», «Timbalero», «Abuelita» y más.
Tamién integró la orquesta salsera Fania All Stars dende la so creación, en 1968 hasta los sos últimos años de vida; cabo mentar que Lavoe foi unu de los artistes principales del sellu Fania Records, lo mesmo que de la Fania All Stars. Con ellos grabó dellos cantares que se convirtieron n'ésitos musicales, tales como «La mio Xente», «El Rei de la Puntualidá», «Ublabadú», «Siento» y más temes que salieron nel discu recopilatorio Fania All-Stars with Hector Lavoe en 1997.
Tres la so separación de Willie Colón, empecipió la so carrera como solista y publicó'l so primer álbum La Voz onde recibió un discu d'oru y llogró per parte de la revista Latin NY, el premiu a Meyor Vocalista Masculín de 1976 y Meyor Conxuntu de 1976. Darréu llanzó otros álbumes como De
