TULSA, Okla. — Retailer and author John F. Lawhon, 86, died Aug. 12.
Lawhon decided at a young age that he wanted a career in the furniture industry. Following a stint in the Air Force, he began managing stores in Michigan and Oklahoma while earning a reputation for success and integrity.
In the late 1960s, after marrying ad executive Catherine Davis, Lawhon opened his first furniture store in Waco, Texas. He would later open stores in Tulsa, Nashville, Tenn., Phoenix, Detroit and a number of other cities and became known for his series of commercials under the direction of his wife’s company, Directional Advertising.
Following a short retirement, Lawhon set out to author his first book, “Selling Retail,” which independently would sell more than 1 million copies. With that book, he began to do seminars across the globe, and created Sales Education Systems for companies.
Survivors include two daughters and granddaughter.
