Based on the same-named book series authored by L. J. Smith, The Vampire Diaries is an American supernatural adolescent drama television series created by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec. The CW broadcast the first episode of the series on September 10, 2009, and it ran for eight seasons, airing 171 episodes till it was cancelled on March 10, 2017.
The pilot episode drew The CW’s greatest audience for any series launch since the network’s inception in 2006; the first season averaged 3.60 million people.
It was the network’s most-watched show before being surpassed by Arrow. The programme has gotten countless award nominations and has won four People’s Choice Awards as well as multiple Teen Choice Awards.
The series is set in the imaginary town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, which has a haunted past. It follows Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), a young girl who has recently lost her parents in a car accident, as she falls in love with Stefan Salvatore, a 162-year-old vampire (Paul Wesley).
As Stefan’s mysterious older brother Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) returns with a plan to bring back their past love Katherine Pierce (also played by Dobrev), a vampire who looks exactly like Elena, their relationship becomes increasingly complicated. Although Da
